Fields Of The Nephilim - The Nephilim

Of all the bands involved in Britain's goth rock movement of the 1980s, Fields of the Nephilim were the most believable. The group's cryptic, occult-inspired songs were sung in a guttural roar by vocalist Carl McCoy. Live appearances were shrouded with dim light and smoke machines, while bandmembers stalked the stage in black desperado gear inspired by western dress. The group was also one of the longest lived of the original goth rock groups, finally breaking up in 1991 when McCoy left for another project.

Fields of the Nephilim formed in 1984, in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, with an original lineup of McCoy, guitarist Paul Wright, his brother Nod on drums, saxophonist Gary Whisker, and bassist Tony Pettitt. The quintet played many live shows and released the EP Burning the Fields in late 1984. Whisker then left the band, just as Peter Yates was added as a second guitarist. Beggar's Banquet, also the home of goth rockers Southern Death Cult and Bauhaus, signed the Nephilim and released the singles "Power" and "Preacher Man" in 1986. Both did well on the independent charts; "Preacher Man" made it to number two, increasing the expectation for debut album Dawnrazor, which appeared in 1987. The album also did well on the indie charts, but later that year Fields of the Nephilim finally cracked the pop singles chart with "Blue Water." In June 1988, second album The Nephilim reached number 12 in the pop charts, while the single "Moonchild" made number 28. A live video titled Forever Remain was also released in 1988.

The Nephilim approached their second album with confidence and a clutch of stunning new songs. The resulting, semi-self-titled release blows away the first by a mile (the art design alone, depicting an ancient, worn book with strange symbols, is a winner), being an elegantly produced and played monster of dark, powerful rock. Even if McCoy's cries and husked whispers don't appeal to all, once the listener gets past that to the music, the band simply goes off, incorporating their various influences -- especially a good dollop of pre-Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd (think songs like "One of These Days") -- to create a massive blast of a record. Buchanan again produces with a careful ear for maximum impact, whether it be the roaring rage of "Chord of Souls" or the minimal guitar and slight keyboard wash of "Celebrate"; McCoy's vocal on the latter is especially fine as a careful, calm brood that matches the music. Perhaps most surprising about the album is that it yielded an honest-to-goodness U.K. Top 40 hit with "Moonchild," which is very much in the vein of earlier songs like "Preacher Man" but with just enough of a catchier chorus and softer guitar part in the verse to make a wider mark. Though the first part of the album is quite fine, including such longtime fan favorites as "The Watchman" and "Phobia," after "Moonchild" the record simply doesn't let up, building to a fantastic three-song conclusion. "Celebrate" is followed by "Love Under Will," a windswept, gloomily romantic number with a lovely combination of the band's regular push and extra keyboards for effect. "Last Exit for the Lost" wraps everything up on an astonishing high; starting off softly with just bass, synths, one guitar, and McCoy, it then gently speeds up more and more, pumping up the volume and finally turning into a momentous, unstoppable tidal wave of electric energy.

Peter Murphy - Deep

Hijo de una humilde familia irlandesa, pero establecido en Inglaterra, Murphy conoce en el colegio a Daniel Ash (guitarra), con quien forma Bauhaus junto a David J (bajo) y Kevin Haskinss (batería). Bauhaus graban su primer single "Bela Lugosi is dead" en 1979 convirtiéndose en una de las formaciones punteras del movimiento after punk siniestro emergente en esa época, junto a gente como Joy Division o Siouxsie And The Banshees.

En 1985 Peter Murphy emprende carrera en solitario. Ayudado en la composición por el guitarrista Howard Hughes y por otro guitarrista de renombre John McGeoch (ex Siouxsie And The Banshees) edita en 1986 su primer disco en solitario "Sould the World Fail To Fall Apart", precedido por el single "Final Solution" (versión de un tema de Pere Ubu). Aunque ni el single ni el disco funcionan comercialmente, sirven para que Peter Murphy comience a abrirse camino en el mercado americano.

Tras una gira de gran éxito por EEUU y Europa durante todo 1988 y parte de 1989, Peter Murphy alcanza su cima de éxito comercial con el álbum "Deep" editado a comienzos de 1990. Aunque el disco va precedido por el single "The Line Between The Devils Teeth" que no acaba de calar, es con su segundo single "Cuts You Up" con el que consigue el auténtico boom mundial.

Helped in the composition by the guitarist Howard Hughes and another guitarist of reputation John McGeoch (ex- Siouxsie And The Banshees) publishes in 1986 its first record" Should the World Fail To Fall Apart" , preceded by single "Final Solution". Although neither single nor the disc works commercially, serve to Peter Murphy as an introduce to the American market.

After a tour of great success in the USA and Europe in 1988 and 1989, Peter Murphy reaches its top of commercial success with the album "Deep" published at the beginning of 1990. Although the disc goes preceded by single " The Line Between The Devils Teeth" that it does not finish piercing, is with his second single " Cuts You Up" with that it secures the authentic world-wide boom.

Bauhaus es un banda de rock británica (formada en Northampton en 1978) que fue popular en los 80. La banda tomó su nombre de la escuela de diseño alemana Bauhaus creada durante la segunda década del siglo XX, aunque en un principio se llamaron Bauhaus 1919, perdiendo la última parte antes del primer año.

A pesar de que había bandas precursoras del estilo gótico, muchos consideran a Bauhaus la primera banda gótica. Bauhaus combinaban un gran número de influencias punk y glam rock. Su sonido influyó, inspiró y llamó la atención sobre un conjunto de grupos post punk generando el estilo intenso y triste que acabó siendo el rock gótico.

Although there were precursory bands of the gothic style, many consider to Bauhaus the first gothic band. Bauhaus combined a great number of influences punk and glam rock. Its sound influenced, inspired and call attention on a set of post punk groups generating the intense and sad style that it finished being the gothic rock.

Gary Numan - Replicas

Gary Numan (Gary Anthony James Webb) es un cantante y compositor británico, pionero del synth pop y el electropop.

La carrera musical de Gary Numan empieza a mediados de la década de los 70 cuando forma una banda punk llamada Mean Street, con quien toca en diversas giras (parte de una de ellas se puede hallar en el compilado en vivo Live At The Vortex, cuyo espectáculo se llevó a cabo en un lugar de presentaciones llamado Vortex). Luego ingresa a la también banda punk The Lasers (de Londres), donde se desampeñaba como guitarrista y donde conoce al bajista Paul Gardiner.

Después de dejar The Lasers, forma junto con Gardiner su propio grupo: Tubeway Army. Después de grabar un primer álbum más próximo al punk, fueron contratados por el sello discográfico independiente Beggars Banquet Records en 1978 y rápidamente lanzó dos sencillos, ninguno de los cuales entró en las listas de éxitos. Ese mismo año, el que es considerado álbum de debut, del mismo nombre que la banda y en esencia de estilo New Wave, agota su primera tirada limitada e introduce la fascinación de Numan por la ciencia ficción distópica y, lo que sería más importante, los sintetizadores. Hasta ese momento desconocidos, Tubeway Army se colocan lo más alto en las listas de éxitos inglesas en 1979 con el sencillo Are friends Electric?, y el álbum que lo contiene, Replicas, sube simultáneamente al número uno.

Con la realización del segundo álbum, 'Replicas' Newman fue el punto focal y lider del grupo electro punk. El nuevo género se vió ampliamente respaldado en Inglaterra. El grupo hizo un gran esfuerzo por permanecer con la misma linea y sonido que se escuchó en su primera producción de 1978, el sonido de guitarras distorsionadas producido por sintetizadores Moog así como un look de Newman muy cercano a la era espacial, fueron sus cartas de presentación.



Gary Numan (Gary Anthony James Webb) is a British singer and pioneering composer of synth Pop and Electropop.

His musical career begins in the middle of the 70's when forms a punk band called -Mean Street-, with they he made several tours (part of them can be found in the compilation -Live at The Vortex-). Soon enters into the punk band called The Lasers (of London), where played the guitar and meet the bassist Paul Gardiner.

After leaving The Lasers, it forms with Gardiner his own group -Tubeway Army-. After recording their first album next to the punk, they were contracted by the independent seal Beggars Banquet Records in 1978 and quickly take out two singles, none of which entered into the lists. That same year, the one that is considered their debut album, the same name of the band and in essence in a New Wave style, exhausts his first limited distance and introduces the fascination of Numan by distopic science fiction and, which would be more important, the synthetizers. Until that moment the unknown, Tubeway Army reach the highest positions in the lists of England in 1979 with the single -Are friends Electric?- , and the album that contains it, -Replicas-, reach at the same time the number one.

By the release of their second album, Replicas, Gary Numan was the undisputed focal point and leader of icy electro-punkers Tubeway Army. And the move proved to be massively successful back home in the U.K., where both the album and the single "Are 'Friends' Electric?" topped the charts. The band had made a conscious effort to streamline the sound heard on its 1978 self-titled debut -- the distorted guitar riffs were played on Moog synthesizers instead, and Numan had perfected his faux-space-age persona.

Love And Rockets

Grupo formado en 1985 por Daniel Ash (guitarra, saxofón y voz), David J (bajo y voz) y Kevin Hashkins (percusiones y sintetizador), después del rompimiento con Peter Murphy en el icónico grupo gótico Bauhaus.

El nombre de la banda fué tomado de un cómic hecho por Jaime y Gilberto Hernández.

A pesar del status que tenían como banda gótica, Love and Rockets cambió de género, y demostraron con su primer éxito menor 'Ball of Confusion' (cover de la época de Motown) que tenían futuro como agrupación. Su primer álbum en el año de 1985 'Seven Dream of Teenage Heaven' los llevó más hacia el post punk y la música psicodélica. Su segunda producción en 1986 'Express' continuó por la misma via, a diferencia de 'Earth, Sun and Moon' en 1987 donde dieron un giro radical para tener un sonido más -folk-.

En 1989 realizó su disco homónimo que presenta lo que se le denomina AOR (Album Oriented Rock = tendencia muy cercana a los programadores de emisoras de radio). El segundo sencillo del álbum de T. Rex, 'So alive' se convirtió en una de sus canciones más conocidas.

Es un disco básico para el género, definitivamente un Must Have.

The name of the band was taken from the comic magazine made by Jaime and Gilberto Hernandez.

In spite of the status that they had like gothic band, Love and Rockets changed of musical style, and demonstrated with its first smaller success ' Ball of Confusion' (a cover of Motown) that had future like band. Its first album in the year of 1985 ' Seven Dream of Teenage Heaven' look them more towards post punk and psychedelic music. His second production of 1986 ' Express' continued by the same road, unlike ' Earth, Sun and Moon' in 1987 where they gave a radical turn to have a - folk- sound.

In 1989 take out the market his homonymous disc that presents what AOR is denominated (Oriented Album Rock = tendency very near to the programmers of radio stations). The simple second of an old T. Rex album, ' So alive' became one of his more known songs .

A record for the genere, definitively a -Must Have-.

The Southern Death Cult

Southern Death Cult fue una banda inglesa de rock gótico de inicio de los 80s. El nombre de la banda lo retoman de la cultura nativa americana conocida hoy día como -El complejo ceremonial del Sureste-. El grupo fue integrado por Ian Astbury (voz), David Burrows (guitarra), Barry Jepson (bajo) y Hak Quereshi (batería).

La primera presentación del grupo fué en el 'Queen's Hall' en bradford Inglaterra en octubre de 1981. Tuvieron muchas presentaciones en Inglaterra promocionando su EP de tres canciones "Moya/Fatman/The girl" con el cual la banda alcanzó el no. 1 en las listas independientes. Fueron teloneros de -Theatre of Hate- y posteriormente de -Bauhaus- a finales de 1982. Astbury desintegró el grupo después de un show en febrero de 1983.

Las grabacinones de demos y presentaciones en vivo de Southern Death Cult fueron recopiladas en un solo disco editado por -Beggars Banquet-, llamado Southern Death Cult.

Rooster: Cuando me prestaron este disco a finales de 1993, era una grabación en cinta, sin portada ni nada, solo con el nombre del grupo escrito en él. Al momento de escucharlo llegó a mi mente la voz de The Cult, y claro, ya investigando cuál sería mi sorpresa que eran los inicios de lo que años después se convertiría en The Cult.


Southern Death Cult was an English gothic band from the beginning of 80's. The name of the band was taken from the American native culture, the -ceremonial complex of the South east-. The group was integrated by Ian Astbury (voice), David Burrows (guitar), Barry Jepson (bass) and Hak Quereshi (drums).

The first presentation of the group was in ' Queen' s Hall' in Bradford England in October of 1981. Their EP of three songs had many presentations in England, promoting " Moya/Fatman/The girl" with which the band reached no. 1 in the independent lists. They were openers of - Theatre of Hate- and later of - Bauhaus- at the end of 1982. Astbury disintegrated the group after a show in February of 1983.

Recordings of live presentations of Southern compiled Death Cult was compiled in an album published by - Beggars Banquet-, named Southern Death Cult.

Rooster: When a friend borrow me this album was the year of 1993, it was a tape recording, without cover, only with the name of the group written over it. At the time of listening, comes to my mind ' The Cult', and of course, search for more information, what would be my surprise that was the beginnings of them!.
